House with Four Courtyards – The Purchase Residence

This house is located in Westchester Country, New York, a forested landscape that has been highly developed with small cities, suburbs, highways and roads. The Purchase Residence is designed with four courtyards, which capture as many views as possible while not being overwhelmed by the noise of a near interstate highway. The four-courtyard scheme separated the house to five areas: formal living, diving, kitchen pavilion that looks out on the landscape from every side; a bedroom wing; a study wing; an office wing; a guest wing. The house’s exterior walls were laid with roughened stone faces and then polished smooth when they turned inward to become formal part of the residence. [Cutler Anderson Architects]

Single Storey Black & White House – Whitford House by Sumich Architects

The Whitford House is located on a 2 hectare lot overlooking the Mangemangeroa Creek Inlet. It consists of series of connected pavilions on a single level. The pavilions took the form of the simple gable and were linked by flat roof structures progressing through to the main gable form housing the kitchen/dining/family areas with the pool platform beyond. There are a lot of natural house in the house thanks to large glazing. Entry is gained through a formally landscaped courtyard that acts as a buffer from the surrounding countryside. Thanks to pavilion’s structure there are several more courtyards around the house that have different purpose and views. Materials that was used during the house’s construction are plaster cladding, aluminum joinery and tray roofing, all finished in a ‘black & white’ composition to sit simply against a green country backdrop. House Made Of Eclectic Materials with Arched Metal Roof

This modern 3000 square feet suburban residence is located near Seattle. An openness, close connection to nature and fun are things that define the house’s design. It incorporates an eclectic yet refined mix of materials into playful and light-filled spaces. Besides that the materials are also those that architects use in contemporary house construction: concrete, steel, plaster and wood.
The main part of the house has two storeys with blackened steel panels and an arched metal roof. Inside the structure, heavy timber meets a cement-based walls coated with veneer plaster. The house is heated with hydronic coils in the floors and is cooled passively through locally manufactured windows, doors and ceiling fans. [Schuchart/Dow]

Modern Ranch House Design – Green Mountain Ranch

This glass-and-steel house is located in the Colorado Rockies is designed by Cynthia Leibrock. It’s anything but an usual ranch home. Designed in modern style it’s filled with smart high-end things that make a living there more comfortable. The house also utilize some modern energy-saving technologies like solar panels for heating, doors and windows that prevent heat loss and other more simple things. Besides a patio there is beautiful glass garage outside the house. The kitchen is one of the most high-tech places in the house. It features Gaggenau magnetic induction cooktop, that won’t burn if you touch it, a Gaggenau column refrigerator with shallow shelves and other luxury Gaggenau’s appliances like steam cooker. The guest bath has a reflecting pool and a steam shower with a redwood bench. Besides all that cool stuff the ranch house is optimized to old people live there.

Contemporary Country House for Luxury Living in Chile

Designed by Felipe Assadi + Francisca Pulido studio this contemporary country house is located in Calera Tango, Santiago, Chile. It’s built for a happy family on 4.5 Ha area with fruit trees only in one hour drive from capital. Concrete foundation wall that what elevates house from the ground includes a swimming pool and a basement. The first volume consist of public spaces like living and dining rooms. This volume is mostly covered by large gazing or with Larch wood. The second volume at the same time is a glass-and-concrete box which features more private sleeping areas. Glass used in the glazing is a thermo-pane glass with a green dye, which filters out ultraviolet rays and creates the greenhouse effect. Contemporary Home Blended with Surrounding Woods

This contemporary home is a remodeling of classical 1950s ranch style house for a couple and their two children. It’s surrounded by secluded woods and its new exterior finishes were chosen to blend with the shadowed tree trunks around. The windows are designed to maximize views of all that surrounding nature. Because of sloping site the house has two stories on the one side and one story on the another. Between these two wings a large desk with a pool took up all the place. The interior become more open and light-filled thanks to removing of some interior walls. Materials that were chosen for interior design made it more natural and cozy. [u+b architects, via]

Fawcett house by Frank Lloyd Wright is a luxury farm house on the approximately 80 acres site in San Joaquin Valley. The entire property is a work of art in itself. Living spaces include 5 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, open plan living room, dining room, & kitchen formalized by ornamental screens, a utility-store room and central laundry. The spiritual center of the house is 12 foot wide fireplace in living room which is the great place to gather with family and friends. The house’s garden and courtyard also are its pride. There are swimming pool, Koi pond with fish, workshop, 3 car carport and great Japanese style garden landscape design. The site also includes a walnut orchard. House on the Cliff Carved Into the Solid Rock

Villa Astrid is another beautiful work by Wingardhs design studio on dramatic West Swedish landscape. The crucial parameter for the design of Villa Astrid was dictated by the local building code, which stipulates a 3.5-metre eaves height and a roof pitch between 14 and 27 degrees. This effectively reduces the size of the villa as seen from the street where only one storey is visible. The villa has an open-plan kitchen, a separate dining room and a large lounge nestled between the atrium and a sea view with the afternoon sun and sunsets. The lower store, hidden from the neighbors contains the bedrooms and other private spaces. The structure as a whole is carved into the solid rock of the hillside and the architect left a big chunk of that same rock in the living room and bathroom as a reminder of nature. The roof is made of concrete, insulated with Foamglas and then clad with metal sheeting. The walls have been built in solid, light-weight concrete, plastered on the inside and outside, and then clad with metal sheeting. The black, pre-patinated, copper sheets are bound by limestone gravel around the base of the building. [Wingardhs]

Low Maintenance House Design – Walnut House

Walnut House is one of the best works of Portland’s company Giulietti/Schouten.

The house is situated a few miles outside of McMinnville on 2.5 acre sloping site in a walnut grove. In order to create maintenance-free house materials was chose as low maintenance as possible. Some of these materials are: galvanized metal siding, aluminium windows, exposed concrete wall and veneer wood panels for siding. Simple passive and sustainable features of the house include rainwater harvesting, roof-mounted solar hot water heating, in-floor radiant heating, cork floors, natural day-lighting and Icynene sprayed-on insulation.

The two-bedroom, three-bath home with a 527 square foot attached garage is inspired by the Bay Area hillside ranch homes. The overall house design could be called as wonderfully glassy and spacious. It separated for two wings: the north one for the private Master Bedroom suite and home office; the south one for the living, dining and kitchen areas. [Giulietti/Schouten Architects ]

The Red Wooden House by JVA

The Red house is located in the western suburbs of Oslo, Norway. A river flow near it and the house is placed perpendicular to the stream. The exterior done in wooden panels painted in red color which reflects temperament of the owner. It also make the house be in contrast with the landscape as during the winter as during the summer. A lot of wooden elements could be also found inside the house. Such theme was chosen to make it more cosy and warm. The house is separated on two areas: for parents and for their children. Top floor with wide southern views is designed for parents, while the lover floor is faced the river and designed as children’s area. [JVA]
