Villa Bio – Contemporary House with Hydroponic Rooftop Garden

This villa is designed by Enric Ruiz-Geli’s firm Cloud9. It is an example of usual contemporary structure made of concrete but with a quite intriguing shape and very usual features that changes its look entirely. The most cool feature is that the building itself is the extension of the site. It is conceived as a growing C-shaped spiral with grass and plants on the roof. Besides hydroponic rooftop garden there is an underground garage so the structure is very economical and environmental. There is a lot of glazing in the house and its rear features an almost 50 foot-wide expanse of glass. Being environmental by itself the house also features the landscape views from many rooms. { Cloud9 }

House with Forest Inside It – House at Orchard by Chang Architects

Located in Singapore this house unites concrete, glass, timber, steel and elements of nature like plants and trees. It has interchangeable rooms floating in a bigger volume of space. This volume is fitted into a terrace plot with a 2-storey high retaining wall at the rear, which was transformed into a pebbled waterfall that opens up to the sky. Below, a pond that collects rainwater encompasses the living area. Everywhere around the house different plants and trees could be found. Living in such place is like living in a forest in the middle of the city. Even a microclimate there is different from usual houses. [Chang Architects, via: worldarchitecturenews]

Modern and Minimalist Wrap House by Japanese Architects

Future Studio is an architect’s office based in Hiroshima, Japan, headed by architect Bunzo Ogawa. Like many others Japanese architects they have interesting works under their belt. This house is one of those works. It’s called Wrap House because of its characteristic shape. Its second floor features cool terrace “wrapped” by several walls. Besides that the house has very contemporary and modern design with elements of minimalism that are quite common for Japanese houses. The color theme of the exterior is purely black and white while inside are some other light and natural tones besides them. Exclusive House Design with Large Indoor Swimming-Pool Area

Eva Harlou is the architect from Denmark who is responsible for the Z House design. The house is located on the eastern coastline of Jutland, Denmark and there live two parents and four their children. Exclusive Z-shape of the three-level house solves all challenges of the site. Besides beautiful sea views house’s rooms has great views to outdoor terraces on 2 different levels. The basement includes garage, storage, wine cellar, game rooms, bathrooms and a large indoor swimming-pool area with direct access to the garden. The first level includes the main entrance hall, a utility room, bedrooms, bathrooms, an open kitchen and a large living room with direct access to the lowest roof terrace. The top floor includes master bathroom, master bedroom with walk-in closet and a smaller living room with a fireplace. The top floor has a unique panoramic view towards the sea and access to the top roof terrace surrounded by a hedge of bamboo. In the central part of the house a large wall painting underlines the triple high entrance hall creating a great vertical connection through the house. [Eva Harlou]

Cutting Edge House Placed on a Small Allotment

Designed by McBride Charles Ryan this house has an amazing, cutting edge shape and a pool near it. All that is placed on a quite small allotment but outdoor area is more than cool for such small space. Street frontage planting sets a casual but vibrant tone to the property. Flowering grasses soften and spill over level changes, curtains of deep green creeper cascade over stone clad walls and the brilliant lilac of Jacaranda bloom splashes a hit of colour against the somber tone of the building. Boundary walls and fences were draped with climbing plants to provide green backdrops to the texture pavements. Further layering was done by using espaliered plantings in front of the walls. The positioning and selection of trees was critical to allow ease of movement around the property and to avoid congestion at canopy height. The result of the architect’s work is a harmonious but sometimes surprising outdoor space with the cutting edge house. [Eckersley Garden Architecture]

Concrete Box House with Glass Platform on the Top

De Blas House is placed at the crest of a north faced hill with views to the mountains near Madrid. The house consists of concrete box build as a platform with a transparent glass box roofed by delicate and light steel structure painted in white on it. The poured-in-place concrete box like a cave houses the living areas of a traditional house separated for private and public spaces. The glass box, placed upon the platform like a hut, is a belvedere to which one rises from within the house. The concrete box is 9 by 27 meters while the glass box is 4.5 x 9 meters by 2.26 meters high. The house attempts to be a literal transaction of tectonic and stereotomic questions: a tectonic piece set upon a stereotomic box. [Alberto Campo Baeza]

Architect’s Island Home – Clingstone House

103-year-old Clingstone mansion set on a rock island in Narragansett Bay is owned by Boston architect Henry Wood. Even though the all-wood home with 360-degree view of the ocean is quite old and rough it’s still warm and beautiful. Three stories tall house features 23 rooms, 10 of which are bedrooms. Even though the house is quite expensive to maintain because of it’s made of wood, it still use modern technologies to cut pay bills. Solar panels heat the water, and a wind turbine on the roof generates electricity. Rainwater is collected in a 3,000-gallon cistern, then filtered, treated and pumped through the house for cleaning purposes. Besides that, Clingstone house use the latest technologies in filtering seawater and the most up-to-date composting toilets. [via freshome, NY]

Unique and Brutal House Design – Volcano House

This house is sited upon small volcanic cone in the high desert midway between Las Vegas & Los Angeles. Its design it is a great combination of an uniqueness and brutality. Its roof consist of concrete and truss beams that forms its dome allowing the interior to embrace 360 degrees of stark, strong almost lunar landscape. Main house has two bedrooms, two baths and open entertaining areas. Besides it there is a guest house with one bedroom and bath near the lake. Even though there aren’t any trees or plants around the house is quite awesome place to live because of its privacy.

House on the Hill Linked to the Landscape – Krater House

The house is situated on the top of a hill on Antiparos, in the Cycladic islands, Greece. There was a lot of challenges in designing it related to its position. First of all there was a need to protect living areas from strong winds of the Aegean Sea and to hide them from the settlement at the foot of the hill. That’s why part of the house was dug into the landscape. In the result, the house is not only protected from wind but only its second store is visible from the village. Stone surfaces defines borders of the Krater house. A 25 meter long lap pool is located at the Krater’s west part which also features amazing sea views. The kitchen’s windows frame views of the pool and its infinity-edge. A courtyard is also protected from winds and is separated from living area only with large glass sliding doors that blur the boundaries between it and the interior space. [Deca architecture]

Modern Wooden House Design with Original Shape

Fro a basic form this house in Utrecht, Netherlands is something that stands out in the countryside landscape. Designed by Amsterdam architect Rocha Tombal, House Bierings has timber-clad and differently shaped windows at various angles on all sides. The house is unusual not only outside. At the ground floor it has the angled ceiling with different shaped openings that provide natural light to interior. The kitchen is the heart of this home. It has big glass wall straight into the garden. The living room at the same time is a quiet, north-lighted attic space, from which a big opening exposes the surrounding green like in a framed painting.
