The Smart Home 2010 – Renovated Chicago’s Greenest House

The Smart Home is the Chicago’s greenest house located on the ground of the Museum of Science and Industry. It’s opened to public from 2008 but recently was renovated by Midwest Living. The home is designed to reflect the lifestyle of an empty-nester couple and features soft, organic textures and colors fused with a contemporary style — as well as unique green technologies for the 21st century. It shows that you can build the house that has great spaces for entertaining, a master bedroom that serves as a retreat, a whimsical nursery/playroom for a visiting grandchild and a functional home office on a standard Chicago city lot.

A highlight of the first floor is the wood and polished concrete dining room table, made by Chicago furniture designer Keelin Kennedy, from the wood of a 100-year-old bur oak tree that fell on the Museum’s property in 2009. Chicago artist Terry Karpowicz has also made a headboard, coffee table and three side tables from the tree for use in the home.

Upstairs, soft greens and blues symbolize new beginnings and renewed energy. The master bedroom and bath are designed as a personal retreat for the couple, featuring a bamboo bed with organic bedding. The master bath boasts a walk-in shower with gorgeous glass tile made from recycled wine bottles, sleek sinks created from recycled porcelain, low-flow showerheads and dual-flush toilets.

Throughout the home the lighting design by GE Lighting helps to expand the mood of the interior design. Bringing the natural lighting of outdoors in, using the newest Energy Star-qualified CFL and LED bulbs, gives the Smart Home up to 75 percent more energy savings when compared to incandescent bulbs.

Natural and Energy Efficient House Design on Bainbridge Island

This house on Bainbridge Island is an unique work is designed by home owner who’s an educator by profession. Its site is private, wooded area that is perfect for those who want to live peacefully and quietly. The main concept is to make daily living and entertaining as natural and efficient as possible. The home is full of creative little design tweaks especially for a retired couple. It combines some progressive materials, green concepts and a northwest contemporary layout. The entrance door of the house is Frank Lloyd Wright design glistening with beveled glass. Three Level House for Three Family Generations

Designed by Berkley-based McGlashan Architecture this house is located on a beautiful hillside in Marin Country, near San Francisco. Its form and color are inspired by the hillside landscape. It has three levels and three generations of an extended family live there. Roofs of all three levels are planted with drought resistant and native gardens. Besides that it is super insulated and designed for passive solar conditioning. With the solar panel array, it is also designed for a net-zero energy footprint. House Renovation Which Achieved The Highest LEED Rating in the Area

LEED for Homes is a green home certification system for assuring homes are designed and built to be energy- and resource-efficient and healthy for occupants. This house renovation is done Georgia and it achieved the first LEED Platinum certification in the area. It serves as a model of greener living for the entire community and heavily focuses on reducing energy use and the reuse of materials. The 4 bedroom, 3 bath project features triple pane low-e argon windows, high efficiency Energy Star LED lighting fixtures and compact fluorescent bulbs and spray foam insulation. Other energy efficiency and water saving upgrades include a solar thermal hot water system with an on-demand hot water circulation loop, dual-flush toilets and low-flow bathroom fixtures, Energy Star Appliances, programmable thermostat with high efficiency gas furnace and air conditioners, mechanical ventilation, as well as a 5000 gallon rainwater collection system for irrigation. The necessary plumbing, for the future use of greywater or rainwater for toilet flushing, has also been installed. [Hammertime Construction]

Remodeled House With Large Manmade Pond Near It

Located on the peninsula south of San Francisco, this house sits on an internal suburban flag lot. It was build in 1950s but recently remodeled. A cool manmade pond that was there before become the thing that add a feeling of being at a vacation retreat to every day life. The site consist of four buildings – the main house, study, pool house anda garage. All of them are focused on the pond, garden and pool. There is also a terrace near the pond that is separated from the interior by glazed sliding doors. The roofs conceal photovoltaic and solar hot water panels. The house is heated with a radiant system in the stone floors, and despite the hot climate it is not air conditioned, but passively cooled with a combination of overhangs, shades, and operable windows. Cool Wooden Frame House – Sag Harbor House

This house is a redesign of existing house in Sag Harbor, New York. The original house was a traditional old wooden house but surrounded by beautiful nature. That was used during the remodel so the new house is also has wooden frame and the interior is very well connected to the exterior. There are several decks, terraces and stairs so owners could easily go for a walk from almost every part of the house. Besides that there are quite large windows around the house so there is a lot of natural light and cool views in many house’s rooms. All exterior wood work is done with reclaimed-recycled woods. Coastal House Design with Rear Sheltered Courtyard and Wood Fired Pizza Oven

This relaxing holiday home is located in Emu Bay, Australia. It features panoramic sea views but is protected from winds. There are several timber decked terraces which provide outdoor seating depending on wind direction. The sheltered rear courtyard, framed by two bedroom wings of the building, large water tanks and timber screens focuses on a wood fired pizza oven. Corrugated colorbond, timber windows, flooring and decking, reinforces the relaxed timeless holiday atmosphere whilst the floating roof form adds drama to the exposed site. The living area also designed to maximize dramatic views with floor to ceiling windows. The house is designed with green technologies in mind. It has double glazing, smart cross ventilation and fans for cooling and a highly efficient combustion heater for heating. Hot water is from an efficient electric heat pump. House That Consists of Two Simple Cubes on a Remote Site

This house is located on a remote 10 acre site in Central Oregon. Only trees surround it. The house consists of two simple cubes, one for sleeping and one for living. The sleeping box is low & burrowed into earth, while the living box floats above, hovering just at treetop level. Thanks to its position, the living area has awesome views. The house’s exterior is covered with durable and fire proofed materials. A lot of “green” technologies are used in the house. All rainwater could be harvested & stored for landscaping or firefighting purposes. Tube solar water heaters efficiently provide most of the heating for the home through in-floor radiant tubing. The buildings narrow profile and extensive glazing combined with the regions low humidity allow for passive cooling of the home. [PIQUE]

This award-winning environmentally friendly modular built home is a project by Architecton and Shelter Industries. The 1,400 square feet v-shaped vacation home is the result of the growing interest in preserving environmental resources by using reclaimed, recycled and sustainable materials and products. The house’s exterior is made of cedar and steel cladding with custom-fabricated metal roof. Windows are designed to save energy like other energy-efficient appliances in the house.
