Sustainable House With Raw Stone Exterior

Camel Quarry House is built on the footprint of the burnt out ruin of the original house. The site features great views of natural landscape and blends with it very well thanks to the exterior done in raw stones combined with several wood inserts. Its form is simple – a rugged face reflecting the quarry and estuary and a smoother façade facing the more sheltered, rural landscape. The new house is an informal, practical and low energy family home. It uses sustainable sources of energy that includes ground source heat pumps and solar panels concealed in the roof. The walls and roof are heavily insulated to reduce heating loads, windows are triple glazed using high performance insulative glass and water is obtained from an onsite bore hole.

Sustainable House with Large Expanses Of Glass – Flyway View House by Jon Anderson

The Flyway View House is designed by Jon Anderson Architecture and located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The design’s concept was to maximize views of the bird habitat and to take advantage of solar exposure and passive ventilation. Simple sustainable materials and the thoughtful use of glass blends the indoor and outdoor living spaces. Overhangs protect living areas from the summer heat but exploit the sun for passive heat gain during winters. All exterior walls are done in concrete blocks. The roof deck is made of steel. The large glass areas are built from storefront components with a black anodized finish.

Sustainable Wooden Home with Glazed Wall That Highlight The Parking Lot

Casa Schierle is a relatively small wooden house designed by Matthias Benz and is located in a beautiful village near Munich, Germany. It’s designed with sustainability in mind and serves very well for contemporary lifestyles of its owners. The exterior color palette is quite dark what makes it different from surrounding houses and make it noticeable among all greenness outside. The interior is designed in contemporary style and features an interesting combination of white, wood, brown and green surfaces. Another very interesting feature of the house is a glazed wall in the living area which frames cars parked near by. The wall is a perfect solution for those people who really like their cars.

Lego-Like Small Houses Based on Prefabricated 15 Sqm Modules

One+ is a small home modular system designed by Lars Frank Nielsen of the Danish studio ONEN for the Swedish company Add-A-Room. It allows to build small homes or additions to existing ones based on prefabricated 15 square meter modules. These modules are made of high-quality local Swedish materials and has stylish, energy efficient and future-proof design. Such small houses have a lot of implementations. For example, they could be used as a teenage accommodation, as a guest room or even as a summer house. The company delivers them via truck and install it via crane on your site. The minimal price for one module is $35,000.

Sustainable Clad House Blended with Surroundings – Hidden House by Standard

Hidden House by Standard Architecture is located on a serene 7-acre site in the Mount Washington area of Los Angeles. It’s a great example of open to outdoors house. It features two courtyards. The living space opens up to one of them, while the second one looks out over the city. The 3500 square feet home is made of sustainable materials including the redwood cladding, reclaimed endgrain block wood and the cork flooring in some rooms. Besides it also features some other “green” features. Its design allows excellent cross ventilation and day lighting, reducing the need to run forced-air conditioning or heat or energy-consuming electrical lighting. The house is solar-ready and appliances around it are highly efficient. The garden is planted with native landscape and vegetables.

Zig-Zag Single Storey Bungalow House With a Planted Roof

Lien Residence is a house in Singapore, that was designed by Singapore studio Ministry of Design. It is a single storey bungalow-type building with zig-zag shape. The shape helps it to avoid the existing trees and created small courtyard spaces that are sheltered from the weather but allow the entry of light and breezes to the interior and basement level. One more interesting feature of the house is a diagonally-patterned planted roof. The interior plan is divided into three sections – an entertainment zone, a family zone and a private master zone.

Sustainable House Design on an Artificial Island – Blue House by FARO Architecten

The Blue House is designed by Dutch architect Pieter Weijnen of FARO Architecten. It’s located on Steigereiland, one of seven artificial islands dredged from Amsterdam’s lJ Lake in IJburg. Its color reminds deep-blue waters that surround it and that’s how it gets its name. The house designed with sustainable use of energy in mind. The large façade facing south allows a lot of light and heat. The cooling system is inspired by old Arabian cooling towers. Air from the house is pumped into an underground pipe from which the cooled air will be led back to the house. Rain water is re-used for the toilet and washing machine. The building is constructed in wood and recycled materials. The beams in the façade are old bollards from the IJ lake. The copper plates on the suspended living room are from a church roof.

Sweden House With Passive Heating – Villa Nyberg by Kjellgren Kaminsky

Villa Nyberg is an part of the first series of Sweden passive houses designed Kjellgren Kaminsky. It’s designed as environmentally friendly house and is situated in Borlänge, central Sweden. The idea of passive houses is based on the knowledge that people and household equipment generate a lot of energy. That’s why passive houses are extremely well-insulated buildings that are largely heated by the energy already present in the building. Energy simulations shows that Villa Nyberg will have an energy consumption for heating of only 25 kWh/m²year. Reduced heat loss is an another important feature of the house. The round shape of the villa eliminates coldbridges and reduces the enclosing wallarea of the house. It also effects the way you live in the house, during the day one will move from room to room around the building experiencing different views and daylight conditions. { Kjellgren Kaminsky }

Very Modern Yet Not Minimalist House Design – Skywave House by Coscia Day

Who said that very modern house design should be minimalist? Skywave House by Coscia Day shows that isn’t exactly true. The 2,250 square feet house and is set on a 40 ft wide suburban lot in Venice, California. It’s main distinctive feature is a sculptural roof that reminds a breaking wave, which is suspended in time and space and floats over a 1st floor garden space surrounded by glass. The house also took its inspiration from Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang – its color theme is black and white. Besides, the house is designed with many green features, including white standing seam roof/wall for solar gain diffusion, motorized with wind and rain sensors, west facing windows and scoop skylights to catch ocean breezes & a large east facing skylight over the 29 ft entry to vent rising hot air. The ground floor and raised ground floor are solar water radiant heated.

The house isn’t the first one which takes inspiration from waves. Ribbon House by Hartree and Wave House by Tony Owen NDM are others awesome examples of such inspiration.

1840′s Victorian House Remodeled Into Zero Carbon House

Designed by John Christophers of Associated Architects as a family home this house is a winner of RIBA award for architectural excellence in 2010. It’s an unique zero carbon project located in inner city Birmingham, UK. The new house has been built around an existing early Victorian two-bedroom semi-detached house, produces as much energy as it consumes and is twice bigger than the original one. There are now four bedrooms and a studio loft.
