House That Consists of Two Simple Cubes on a Remote Site

This house is located on a remote 10 acre site in Central Oregon. Only trees surround it. The house consists of two simple cubes, one for sleeping and one for living. The sleeping box is low & burrowed into earth, while the living box floats above, hovering just at treetop level. Thanks to its position, the living area has awesome views. The house’s exterior is covered with durable and fire proofed materials. A lot of “green” technologies are used in the house. All rainwater could be harvested & stored for landscaping or firefighting purposes. Tube solar water heaters efficiently provide most of the heating for the home through in-floor radiant tubing. The buildings narrow profile and extensive glazing combined with the regions low humidity allow for passive cooling of the home. [PIQUE]

Environmentally Friendly Modular Built Home – The EcoFabulous Home

This award-winning environmentally friendly modular built home is a project by Architecton and Shelter Industries. The 1,400 square feet v-shaped vacation home is the result of the growing interest in preserving environmental resources by using reclaimed, recycled and sustainable materials and products. The house’s exterior is made of cedar and steel cladding with custom-fabricated metal roof. Windows are designed to save energy like other energy-efficient appliances in the house. The roof is designed to collect rain water. Modular construction helps to cut construction budget.

The kitchen/great room wing and bedroom wing, linked at the main entry and by the courtyard deck, provide multiple accesses to the deck. Modern Japanese Inspired House Design – Zen Garden House

David Jay Weiner, Architects, P.C. was founded with a focus on design and planning with the intention of providing quality architectural services. Their project in the town of Crestone, Colorado is one of examples of their high quality works. With population of 800 people, Crestone become an enclave of spiritual retreats in a past few decades. The house designed by David Jay Weiner is inspired by traditional Japanese architecture but with touch of modern style. This 1600 square feet residence contains three major interior spaces: a great room, which consist of living/dining/kitchen areas, a meditation room and a master bedroom. The exterior envelope consist of black corrugated-metal siding folds. Because of 330 sun days a year house has a photovoltaic panel to collect solar energy. House With Natural Wood And Stone Interior And Exterior

Litmus completely renovated this former home of an esteemed horticulturalist, preserving its original landscaping and relocating its main entrance. Visitors enter through a Torii gate, navigate over a stream and around a pond to the stone-terraced entry. As the entrance as the whole house’s interior are mostly done in natural wood and stone materials. Not only furniture but also interior walls are made of wood. A farmhouse kitchen, dining room and living room are one communal space with an outdoor living room. These space has a beautiful fireplace with custom natural stone cladding. The fireplace’s tube is also one of those things which could bring attention to the house of the whole neighbor because of its size and decorations on the roof. [Litmus]

Green Renovation of 1920s Ranch Home – Stump House

This green renovation of 1920s ranch home was done by local architecture company Architecture W. A lot of original materials was used in the reconstruction but the second story was add and numerous interior walls removed to create an open floor plan that draws natural light deeper into the house and maximizes cross-ventilation. The renovated house utilizes a thermal solar heating system that provides hot water and warms the radiant floor, using a set of roof-mounted tubes rather than the more common flat panels. Besides solar system the roof is partly covered with plants and, on the lower portion of the roof, a vegetable garden and small seating area are located. The house is insulated with recycled denim jeans and equipped with heat extractors that capture energy from the showers and faucets. Waterfront Lake House with Agrarian and Contemporary Design

Another beautiful project by Nathan Good Architect is situated near Lincoln City, Oregon. That is waterfront property overlooking Devil’s lake from many of its windows. The design is a combination of agrarian and contemporary styles. With small building footprint it has everything needed for a comfortable lifestyle. With a lot of clean nature around it blends with it because of materials used during the construction. The lake house also has many contemporary green features like hydronic radiant-heated floors, energy efficient lighting, controls and appliances, natural cross ventilation design, non-toxic materials, a central vacuum system for enhanced indoor air quality. Beach House That Consumes Less Energy Than It Provides

Cannon Beach Residence is designed by Nathan Good Architect with sustainability in mind. It is located on the Oregon beach and provides more energy that it consumes. That is possible because of 5kWh rooftop photovoltaic system and 12-inch-thick concrete walls. There are also solar-thermal tubes that provide hot water and a ground-source heat pump that warms and cools the air. The house is L-shaped and wrapped around Sitka spruce that’s 38 inches in diameter. Recycled materials were used during construction and the house is designed to last multiply generations. It perfectly blends into the forested hillside thanks to its sedum-sprouting green roof. One side of the house has views of Haystack Rock while the other – views of the beach. Luxury Green Home Design – Acqua Liana by Frank McKinney

Acqua Liana is a house which showed that not only small houses could be green and LEED certificated. This house is an incredible 15,071 square foot mansion that sits on 1.6 acres of oceanfront property near Palm Beach in Manalapan, Florida. Besides having 7 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms it has a lot of other features of luxury home design. Some of these features are: an oversized garage with windows to the pool above, fitness studio, swimmable water gardens, glass office, glass wine cellar, glass staircase, glass elevators, 2,000 gallon aquarium bar, waterfall spa with fireplace, yacht dockage and so on. LEED certificate became possible because the house utilizes enough solar power to run two average-sized homes, energy efficient appliances and air-conditioning, roof design that collects runoff water and several pools and ponds which reduce site’s temperature. Pair of Connected Row Homes with Bamboo-Filled Courtyard

Building Arts Workshop (Jeff and Tracy Prose) are those why created The Orchid Street Cityhomes. These houses are not typical duplexes. They share a common wall, a garage and bamboo-filled courtyard. Both units are done in blend of wood cladding, masonry, glass, and slanting roofs and have two stories. Sense of calm could be felt as inside of homes as in their courtyard. Both homes have clean, contemporary interior design with tons of natural light. The first floor of each of the houses is open from the front to the back, and the second-floor rooms are arranged around this central two-story space. The dining area is the heart of the home, anchoring a double-height space onto which the upstairs hallway looks out. A lot of environment friendly techologies are implemented in these homes designs. A rain-screen wall filters rainwater, radiant heating warms surfaces, HRVs draw in fresh air, which is filtered and heated before being released inside and so on. Modernist House on the Slope with Commanding Views

Webster Wilson, the designer of this house on the slope of an extinct volcano in inner city Portland, implemented his vision of modernist design with a humanistic slant. While being designed in modern style the house is complimented by generous use of natural finished wood and stone. Principals of abundant open space and natural light are implemented in the house. It is situated so high that commanding views of the neighbor could be seen almost from every room in all four levels. The clad of the house is done in a dark-stained knotty cedar and a weathered bark. The total house’s area is 2600 square feet. There are 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, working studio, kitchen, laundry, master suite with roof top deck and so on. Low energy lighting scheme, windows with thermally broken aluminum frames, solar panels on the roof and plenty other things implement principals of environment friendly house design.
