Desert Home In Winter Heaven
Tom Kundig designed a house in the high desert of southern Idaho for Jan McFarland Cox. The project took near a decade of her life and become “a life project” for her. Although there were many problems with construction that give time to refine and refine and refine.
The house is situated in desert part of a winter island. There are days during the winter when long driveway is impassable although the house is prepared for that. It has not only traditional elements for winter houses like fireplace and the great view of snowed landscape but also elements of traditional living house like cabinet, home library and a lot of space. The house is built around a single large room that combines kitchen, living and dining areas. It even has a garden of roses, grapevines and fruit trees which are framed by 11-foot-tall concrete walls.
