On a small plot of land, sandwiched between a vineyard shed, a driveway, and a main street, the Quiet House is a project by Artelabo in a village in the south of France. With its tight locale, along with consistent winds, the design proved a challenge and consisted of creating privacy amongst the chaos. That led to a home that turned inward and to the incredible valley views below.

The design is made up of four repeated volumes that are enclosed within an exterior wall. By alternating the volumes, they created four courtyards within the small structure, which was done to avoid strong winds. The stark white exterior has a minimalist silhouette as not to clash with its surroundings. With its lack of windows, it would appear that the interior be dark and closed off but it’s just the opposite, thanks to the courtyards and the use of white color absolutely everywhere, and we all know that it reflects the light.

Each room opens to at least one courtyard and up to three creating indoor/outdoor living. The glass doors are aligned so the valley views could be seen throughout. The interior features are kept minimal with a clean color palette and limited decor, which keeps it feeling larger than it really is. There are some bold touches like a sunny yellow sofa or eye-catchy denim chairs but most of interiors is white and light-filled.

The chandelier of many little bulbs and a patterned rug are pieces of interest here but nothing distract attention from the views
