Modern design isn’t only about looking for new shapes and designs, it’s also about creating innovative materials, too. Philipp Hainke’s Organico presented a collection of chairs and space dividers that combine combines nature and technology with a material that contributes to a new and sustainable way of thinking about materiality and product life cycles.
Using an adhesive composed from calcium hydroxide and casein, the designer pressed hemp fibers and shives into solid shapes. Through extensive research, the optimal composition and structure was found for a sandwich material with a cover of hemp fiber mat and a core of hemp shives that is stable and light at the same time. The look reminds of felt but it’s something much more functional and new, these are eco-friendly and natural materials that more durable than usual felt.
The collection preserves the archaic character of the resources with a clear design that does not forfeit sensuality, the colors are rather natural and muted, nothing too bold. Such furniture and decor will fit a modern space, and it’s meant to use in clusters, get inspired!
